Interstate Licensure Compact

Washington State Academy to Introduce Dietitian Licensure Compact Legislation – January 2026

What is the Dietitian Licensure Compact?

The Dietitian Licensure Compact is an agreement among states that allows licensed dietitians to practice across state lines. Currently, dietitians are limited to working only in the state where they hold a license.

Resources:

By joining the compact, dietitians will gain:

  • Greater mobility to practice in multiple states.

  • Easier transitions when relocating.

  • Reduced licensing barriers.

  • Consistent standards that support public safety and workforce development.

Who Can Participate?

Eligible dietitians must:

  • Hold an active, unencumbered license in a compact state.

  • Be an RDN or have completed an accredited program, supervised practice, and the RDN exam.

Why It Matters

Other health professions—such as nursing, medicine, psychology, and physical therapy—already benefit from interstate compacts. Dietitians will now have the same opportunity to expand access to care and reduce administrative hurdles.
