We are seeking a dynamic individual to fill the position of Executive Director.
JOB SUMMARY: Under the direction of a volunteer Board, coordinate the major activities of the organization, and represent the organization within the WIC, nutrition, and health community. Nutrition First has an annual work plan and is organized into work teams corresponding to the work plan.
This position offers flexible hours in a home office and generous continuing education opportunities.
Average of 20 hours/week; additional hours dependent on funding.
The general duties and skills needed to conduct the business of the organization include:
1. Organizational Management
A. Business Operations
i. Serve as primary contact for organization - manage frontline contact with Board, members, local agencies, allied associations, DOH, and others. Contact will include face to face meetings, telephone conversations and electronic communications.
ii. Manage all financial operations of the organization, coordinated with the elected treasurer. Tasks include financial planning, invoicing and paying bills, filing required government reports, maintaining accounts and company records, and maintaining 501 (c) (3) status.
iii. Maintain data base of current membership, donors and contact lists.
iv. Ensure website and social media are current
v. Represent Nutrition First at national, state, and local meetings and conferences. May require up to 3 days of travel per month, including occasional overnight travel.
vi. Participate in strategic planning for the future of the organization.
B. Contracts and Grants
i. Manage and fulfill obligations of Board-approved contracts and grants. Board, Nutrition First members, and interns may assist as needed.
ii. Work with Board to develop and coordinate activities to obtain funding.
C. Conference Planning
i. Plan up to 10 trainings/year. Trainings can include contract negotiation, site acquisition, registration, agenda, speakers, continuing education, exhibits, conference materials, evaluations and reports. Trainings may involve considerable work with volunteers/interns, and may involve hiring additional help or expanded hours of paid Executive Director time.
2. Advocacy and Legislative Activities
A. Advocate on the behalf of Nutrition First for the purpose of influencing government policies and operations that benefit WIC and other programs that affect the nutrition status of children from families with limited resources.
B. Represent Nutrition First as a member of the Anti-Hunger and Nutrition Coalition Steering Committee.
C. Track and report activities of national and state government related to WIC and other programs that affect the nutrition status of children from families with limited resources to Board monthly.
D. Mobilize legislative action supporters by drafting action alerts, writing op ed pieces, conducting media outreach, among other relevant advocacy and education actions.
3. Board Development - provide support to recruit, develop and train Board members to participate in the business of the organization, including:
A. Work with the Communications Team to coordinate planning, development, and distribution of communication which includes a monthly email communication, social media, and communication avenues as the Board determines.
B. Collaborate with President and President-Elect to develop annual plan of work.
C. Coordinate with Secretary to maintain official Board records.
D. Serve on Board Executive Committee and all Board work committees.
E. Attend monthly Board meetings.
4. Perform other duties for the good of the organization or as requested by the Board.
• Willingness to learn/join us as we continue our focus to include anti-racism and equity and social justice work as a priority.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• In-depth knowledge and experience with WIC at local, state and/or national levels
• Previous Board, committee, or work group experiences.
• Experience with federally funded health or nutrition programs.
• Experience with non-profit organizations.
• Experience with state and federal advocacy.
• Experience planning, coordinating, and marketing large conference-type events (both virtual and in-person.)
• Grant writing, contract development and negotiation, and management of grants and contracts.
• Financial management.
• Facilitation of organizational strategic planning and execution of annual work plans.
• Proficient in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel), Google applications, and Zoom or other virtual meeting applications.
• Ability to quickly learn and use Quick Books, WordPress, MailChimp, RegFox and other applications as needed.
• Works well independently and with large groups.
