Documentation, Coding, Reporting, Monitoring and Reimbursement
Malnutrition in acute care was recognized publically in a landmark article by Charles Butterworth in a 1974 article "Malnutrition in the Hospital Closet". At that time, malnutrition was recognized as detrimental to recovery and contributing to increased morbidity and mortality in hospitals. This article was instrumental in establishing dietetics and nutrition in patient care, however it has been challenging to determine the prevalence and infrastructure to care for and manage this population.

Now, 35 years later...What is malnutrition, and how can registered dietitians and dietetic technicians, registered, help care for malnourished patients? Learn how one health system has established and evolved an environment that acknowledges and communicates patient malnutrition, incorporates care using the Nutrition Care Process and terminology, includes the data in organizational quality improvement, and in some circumstances increases reimbursement to help cover the expenses of the care for this fragile population that is no longer "in the hospital closet.”

Dietetics professionals: Be sure to invite your Medical Records coders to attend this session with you!
Learning objectives:

Identify, document, code and report malnutrition in the acute care setting.
Discuss how malnutrition coding can support the ADA Nutrition Care Process.
Hear how coordination and teamwork between medical staff, nutrition, coding and decision support can benefit patient care.
See examples of data, monitoring systems and processes used to retain integrity of the systems.
Use the information to consider applications in other settings such as long-term care, home care, adult day services, outpatient nutrition and as a model for other conditions.
Identify strategies which help maximize reimbursement within appropriate codes and documentation.
Presenters:

Terese Scollard, MBA, RD, LD, Regional Clinical Nutrition Manager, Providence Health & Services — Portland, Oregon
Kathy Phillips, RHIA, Regional Coding Manager, Regional Health Information Management — Oregon, Portland, Oregon
